Shared IP vs dedicated IP… Do I need dedicated IP for my blogs? That’s the question that I asked on July 2009. And I got myself a dedicated IP in the end. Thought of lot of things back then. SEO, traffic, search engine ranking were the factors that I made the purchase. Does it really help in SEO on improving my blogs traffic?

What is a dedicated IP?
You will get 1 unique IP number for your web hosting account – your primary domain. For my case, 70.40.213.222 is the dedicated IP that I own. When you type 70.40.213.222 into your web browsers address bar, it will route you to the main domain which is JayceOoi.com.

What is a shared IP?
Most of the websites have shared IP addresses. Depend on web hosting provider, 200 to 300 websites sharing the same 1 IP in shared web hosting package is normal. Some have less than 100 websites sharing 1 IP.

Who need a dedicated IP? What benefit does dedicated IP bring?

Having your own Private SSL Certificate.

Anonymous FTP.

Access your website with IP even when the domain name is inaccessible.

Okay, there is lot of myths about dedicated IP on SEO. Some said it did improve Google PageRank and search engine ranking while some denied. I saw some blogs which rank higher in Google does have dedicated IP when I purchased it last year. It is just USD 2.50 per month for dedicated IP. Can’t you earn that back with your blogs? I asked myself. After using dedicated IP for more than 6 months, does my blog traffic increased? YES. But I did lot of other SEO optimizations too. So does dedicated IP really help? I don’t know…

Will you purchase dedicated IP for your blog?

I set my own domains on Allowed Sites in Google AdSense last 2 months. Somebody was trying to sabotage me by clicking lot of the ads. I had no choice and enable own domains to be counted in Google AdSense only. However, I discovered that it was not a perfect move. Yes, it does stop the sabotage act but it also reduces my Google AdSense earning. Why?

Okay, not every visitor will come to your website directly. For example, a visitor translated your website using Google Translate. Google AdSense does not detect your website address but Google Translate address. Therefore, the earning is not counted there. Besides Google AdSense, Nuffnang also use that method to display its ads. But we can’t do anything here.

Funny Chinese translation

I already set Google AdSense back to Allow any site to display ads for my account. Let’s see the earning will be up or not…

I did not have the chance to read both of the Blue Ocean Strategy and Red Ocean Strategy. Just know the high level meaning of them. Red Ocean Strategy is the way that fights hard in existing market while Blue Ocean Strategy values innovation on getting new market. These strategies do not apply on business only, it applies to blogging too.

In SEO world, everyone is fighting to be the highest ranking on a good keyword. I tried lot of efforts to fight a particular very hot keywords (let’s said it as A) by commenting on lot of dofollow blogs with CommentLuv. I also write another post with cold keywords (let’s said it as B) but without any marketing. Based on 1 week Google Analytics traffic, A got 1000 visits and B received 800 visits. I really did lot of works on A but nothing on B. In return, I rather write more articles like B. Normally, I don’t active much in commenting on other blogs. I focus on writing more.

Based on the experiment, the result tells me… Write more valuable articles to get more traffic. The articles must be hot and latest topics. And thanks to Google Analytics Asynchronous Tracking too. It tracks even more accurate. Hitting 5k visitors per day by March 2010 is not a mission impossible.

Thanks to Ah Hong for letting me know about this new feature from Google Analytics ~ Asynchronous Tracking. What is asynchronous tracking?

Unlike a traditional installation, asynchronous tracking optimizes how browsers load ga.js so its impact on user experience is minimized. It also allows you to put your Analytics snippet higher in the page without delaying subsequent content from rendering.

Yes. I always wanted to keep track of my blogs’ traffic totally and without slowing the blog. Therefore, I put Google Analytics code before </body> tag. This will not slow down the website loading but will fail to capture some of the visits due to certain pages did not finish loading until footer and visitors left already. However, with the new asynchronous tracking, thing become totally different. I can keep track all of the visitors and also keep my website loading speed at optimize level.

Testing had been done for few days. I did notice the increase of page view track by Google Analytics. Yeah… I have certain very long pages that can’t track by it. Now it can be tracked with new code. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and install the new Google Analytics Asynchronous Tracking code. Let me know the outcome then.

Blog also can keep fit? Yup. That’s what I do last few weeks. I am optimizing the blog layout in order to give better look for readers and revenue for me. I put up RSS feed email subscribe again at better location where reader can’t miss it. Got a few new subscribers after that. And removed underperformed Google AdSense link ads. There were lot of clicks but very less revenue generated from it. By removing, the clicks moved to Google AdSense Large Rectangle ads ~ gained a little bit more earning there. And Infolinks ads clicks increased too.

Never be afraid to try something new on your blog layout. We learn from mistakes and improve there.

Leaving the same comment in short period and in the same article is not a good method. Automated comment link building will lead your website to Akismet spam folder. You may get few first comments approved. However, when more and more people started to mark your comment as spam. In the end, all your comments will in spam folder all the time. Does it worth the price?

Personally, I won’t purchase this kind of service. And Google does not like it too. I believe most of us don’t like our blog being spammed by these useless comments, right?

Busy… Busy… Busy with finding lot of dofollow with CommentLuv blogs lately. Without NoDoFollow Firefox add-on, my life will be hard. You need to view the source code of the links one by one without the help of this add-on. By looking at the code, if you find rel=”nofollow”, then the link is not being followed. Therefore, no Google PageRank link juice will be passing to that website. Just imaging that you need to see the source code the manual way. Lot of time will be wasted by highlighting the link, right click, and click on view selection source. Remember that you need to do so on every blog.

NoDoFollow in action

There are 2 colour of links when you enable NoDoFollow Firefox add-on. Purple colour links are dofollow while pink colour links are nofollow. So I cut short lot of work with this little simple add-on. I am on this colour mode for few days. And will be in the coming days too. Did you have this NoDoFollow installed at your Firefox? If no, grab yours now – link.

How to get traffic to my website for free? This is a question that being asked by many of us including me. I have been blogging for almost 3 years. What have I done to increase my blog traffic? Well in short, I took the slow and steady move. Being as an application developer in MNC, I blog for part time only. Therefore, I do not have time that most professional bloggers have. However, it does not stop me from blogging professionally.

JayceOoi.com traffic sources on November 2009

JayceOoi.com is the first blog (I called it website for last 2 years as I did not want to admit that it is a blog) that I have. And then PrettyGirl2u.com and spBlogger.com. All of them have traffic from search engines for free. I am not going to discuss on every single step here, just high level as most of us know to do so already.

Things that I do to get traffic to my website for free…

Make my website a search engine optimized (SEO) website.

Comment at others’ blog.

Active at famous forums.

Don’t stop learning new stuff

Search engines love SEO websites. You will get lot of traffic there. All you need to do ~ get lot of incoming links as you can. Personally, I don’t blog purposely for search engine. There are some who do so in order to make money online. And it is proven that it work. I would like to have more direct traffic. Why? This mean that your blog is informative and people are willing to visit again. And indirectly, it will bring more incoming links too. Finally, I always keep this in mind.

Write good content, do proper marketing == <del datetime="2009-12-20T09:01:48+00:00">money money</del> traffic traffic come.

How to avoid Google AdSense click fraud? I also don’t know. But I took below steps to avoid it.

Remove the ad code.

Set my own domains on Allowed Sites only.

Why remove the ad code? That guy clicked on Large Rectangle – top channel ad on JayceOoi.com root level. Based on Google Analytics, that ad only brings less than USD 3 in 1 month. Removed it is a good decision. No use to put it there as it wastes space.

Set own domains on Allowed Sites also will help to reduce your Google AdSense code being used by others to do evil thing ~ click fraud sabotage. All the other domains that using your ad code will be ignore by Google. Therefore, all the worry will be gone.

HostMonster CPU Limiting Factors (Throttling)

Some said that HostMonster CPU Limiting Factors (Throttling) data is not accurate. I tried WP Super Cache for 1 day. It does reduce CPU usage a little bit but not much. Why? My blogs don’t have many hits from SU and Digg. So far, I only got around 80 cache pages. Let’s monitor when I get more traffic hits.

Yeah… It is time for questions and answers. I got several questions regarding make money online. I think it is better to share with all of you.

1. How do you know the Innity ads whether it’s CPM or CPC running on your blog?
Nope. Innity report does not show the type of ads that running on your blog. Innity team will send you email when there is a campaign running on your blog. It maybe CPC, CPM, Site Take Over and others.

2. I found that when I put Nuffnang ads as backup ads in ADSDAQ, the preview is getting some error. The error message say make sure your blog ads is putting correctly. Or because I don’t get any Nuffnang ads while preview.
Make sure you put the correct Nuffnang ad code. For your info, Nuffnang ads only work on the domain that you register with Nuffnang. Therefore, it is okay to see “Error matching blog to blogger entry. If you are the owner of this blog, please check that there is no typo in your blog address and that you have pasted the code from the Add Ads page correctly.” error like below.

3. ADSDAQ, I put the AskPrice for 728X90 = $1.50, and 300X250 = $1.50. Is it too high or too low?
There is no right and wrong on how much AskPrice to set. Personally, $1.50 is the minimum that I set. Some ads are $3.00 and $5.00 for the best Google AdSense spot ~ Large rectangle (Just below article title). ADSDAQ earning depends on US traffic. More US traffic == more revenue.

That’s all for now. Let me know if you have any question. I will try my best to help. Cheer.

I was using Google Gears on Firefox 2.x long time ago until a Google Gears developer broke some codes that crash with Firefox. And after upgraded to WordPress 2.8, I did not see the ‘Turbo’ sign anymore. I thought Google Gears is still not ready for Firefox 3.5 yet. Haha… I was wrong. The option to turn on Google Gears is at the WordPress Tools section all the while (I don’t even notice there are ‘Tools’ section until I read from a plugin readme ).

Okay, what is Gears? Gears is an open source browser extension that lets developers create web applications that can run offline. Gears provides three key features like…

A local server, to cache and serve application resources (HTML, JavaScript, images, etc.) without needing to contact a server

A database, to store and access data from within the browser

A worker thread pool, to make web applications more responsive by performing expensive operations in the background

Your blogging time will be shortening with this Google Gears enabled. It will cut short the loading time, but you still need time to think what to write and type. Try it and believe it.

But I can install it after modified my theme to support threaded comments. So what does this comment reply plugin do? As the name, it will send email when someone replies to your comment. This is great for discussion. And will bring some return traffic too.

Example of replyMail

There is lot of WordPress comment reply plugin like WordPress Thread Comment, Comment Reply Notification, replyMail… The one that I am using is replyMail. It is a really nice plugin. But still can be improved. I will change the output to a better one as some of the email client like Yahoo Mail does not work well with it.

Don’t increase it if you don’t have fast web server like the one that I use ~ HostMonster. Hehe.
Google Webmaster Tools custom crawl rate will last for 90 days only. And you need to reconfigure it again then. For my case, I will need to update it on 19 January 2010. I missed around 2 weeks as the custom crawl rate expired on early this month.

What will faster crawl rate does? More pages will be indexed in Google search database. So do you want to increase Google Webmaster Tools crawl rate?

The theme that I use cannot work properly with WordPress related post plugin. And I did my manual work on the related posts until yesterday. Yes.

Display related posts are a must. It will keep visitors a longer time at your website. If visitors can’t find anything interesting them anymore, they will leave. So we need to optimise the UI layout to meet the need of visitors.

WordPress related post plugin can display random posts or most commented posts if no related post is found. And it can display related posts with thumbnail too. And other nice features…

By the way, you can download WordPress related post plugin at here. It will generate related posts via WordPress tags, and add the related posts to feed.

Do you still need to manage your web hosting? Well, I don’t. After dump the poor support team ~ SmartTeam hosting, I switched to HostMonster. During SmartTeam hosting, I need to call their support team to tell them that my website database was down. And they did not even know. Come on, what is managed web hosting?

Using HostMonster… I can spend my time focus on writing better articles rather than spending time to call up support team. And I just noticed that my blogs’ bandwidth usage passed 100GB per month. Wow… That is lot of traffic there.

September 2009 bandwidth usage

3 of my main blogs (JayceOoi.com, spBlogger.com and PrettyGirl2u.com) hosted in 1 HostMonster account. Why I prefer HostMonster managed web hosting?

Web Hosting Space – Unlimited

Host UNLIMITED DOMAINS

Gigs of Site Transfer – Unlimited

These are the top 3 priority that I need. And it is only USD 5.95 per month ~ discount now. Isn’t that great? By the way, don’t bother to find free web hosting. I don’t think that free lunch will give such features.

Facebook

What makes Facebook one of the best marketing tools? It has lot of users. That’s one of the advantages. And whenever you update something on your Facebook account like post a message, photo, comment. It will show up at your friend’s main page. So they will know what you are doing… You can also import blog RSS to Facebook. Isn’t that great?

I just started to be very active in Facebook lately. Will monitor how much traffic that Facebook will bring.

Website loading speed is very important. Nobody likes to wait long for a website to load. Therefore, a good hosting is a must. And you need to have supportive team from them too. Else it will take even longer time if your hosting have problem.

My friends told me that my blog was slow during loading. I tested myself and discovered the same issue ~ slowness like “waiting for www.jayceooi.com” for 10 to 20 seconds. Then the website started to load. How to improve the loading time then? Check your hosting server status is the first time that you need to do.

Server Status

As you can see, there is alert on server load ~ Box under heavy load — you may experience degraded system performance. You need to contact support team if you continue seeing this message. Else your website will be as slow as turtle.

Service Status

Another thing to check is the service status. All of the services should be okay most of the time. A good hosting will rectify any issue occurs without us inform them. However, I did face problem with my previous hosting company. I need to contact them to bring up the SQL server myself. And they don’t even know that that SQL server was down. What a joke… By the way, my hosting support team solved the issue before I report it.

Finally, be sure that you select a good web hosting like I did. I am using HostMonster. How about you?

Money… Money… Money… Not everyone loves money. However, we cannot survive without it. That’s the simple rule of life. We need money to buy food, pay for daily needs and a place to stay. I am one of the participants in the rat race. Hopefully, will get out from there sooner.

Getting more advertising in your blog does not mean to bring more income. And it will slow down the loading of your website. Some of the readers might go away due to too much advertising. They will like to get the information that they need and not the advertising. Unless the advertising match their interest.

My blogs’ loading speed is slow lately. My friends told me else I did not notice it also. It is not directly due to many advertising but the hosting server response. It is slow when you key in the address and you need to wait until around 10 – 20 seconds for the page to start loading. Hmm… What is going on here?

Anyway, I will focus on the content rather than advertising from now on. With better keywords, they do bring more traffic. And that’s good if you have more CPM ads. Else you will have hard to earn if readers don’t click on CPC ads. Just take my blogs for example, my readers don’t like to click on image CPC ads. Therefore, the CPC ads earning is too low compare to CPM ads.

Finally, read more to gain more knowledge. It will help you to write better article == bring more traffic. And make sure your marketing is correct too.

Yes. I discovered the first issue after upgraded to WordPress 2.8. The WP-PostRatings developed by Lester ‘GaMerZ’ Chan cannot work. It failed to rate. What is going on here? After searching around, I discovered that the new WP-PostRatings 1.50 will generate some JavaScript codes at the footer. It requires <?php wp_footer(); ?> code in your theme footer template.

My current theme does not have <?php wp_footer(); ?> code at footer. So WP-PostRatings fail to rate. So if you are facing the same problem as I do, just double check that your footer template has <?php wp_footer(); ?> and header template has <?php wp_head(); ?>.

Yup. I upgraded all my 3 blogs to WordPress 2.8.2 in less than 1 minute. I love this new automatic update from WordPress. It is really as easy as ABC. Why I needed to upgrade all my blogs to version 2.8.2? I should upgrade them one by one to check for any incompatibility that might occur. I missed out that.

I want to make the PageNavi (navigation link at bottom of the page) to look better. I tweak the PageNavi CSS to follow One Theme navigation link style. I managed to make it look almost like One Theme at spBlogger.com but not in JayceOoi.com and PrettyGirl2u.com. Hmm… Why? After troubleshooting, I discovered that PageNavi version 2.5 is in use at spBlogger.com while version 2.4 at the other 2. And I cannot upgrade it to version 2.5 because it cannot support WordPress 2.7. So I decided to upgrade all of them in one shot.

Luckily, nothing unusual happen (for the moment). And I did notice that WordPress 2.8 is faster than 2.7 in post editing. Therefore, I recommend all of you to upgrade to version 2.8.2 as soon as possible.
