Shared IP vs dedicated IP… Do I need dedicated IP for my blogs? That’s the question that I asked on July 2009. And I got myself a dedicated IP in the end. Thought of lot of things back then. SEO, traffic, search engine ranking were the factors that I made the purchase. Does it really help in SEO on improving my blogs traffic?
What is a dedicated IP?
You will get 1 unique IP number for your web hosting account – your primary domain. For my case, 70.40.213.222 is the dedicated IP that I own. When you type 70.40.213.222 into your web browsers address bar, it will route you to the main domain which is JayceOoi.com.
What is a shared IP?
Most of the websites have shared IP addresses. Depend on web hosting provider, 200 to 300 websites sharing the same 1 IP in shared web hosting package is normal. Some have less than 100 websites sharing 1 IP.
Who need a dedicated IP? What benefit does dedicated IP bring?
Okay, there is lot of myths about dedicated IP on SEO. Some said it did improve Google PageRank and search engine ranking while some denied. I saw some blogs which rank higher in Google does have dedicated IP when I purchased it last year. It is just USD 2.50 per month for dedicated IP. Can’t you earn that back with your blogs? I asked myself. After using dedicated IP for more than 6 months, does my blog traffic increased? YES. But I did lot of other SEO optimizations too. So does dedicated IP really help? I don’t know…

Does your blog have lot of Digg or Stumble Upon traffic hits? And your web hosting cannot take that hits and crash. Fear no more. WP Super Cache WordPress plugin comes to rescue.

HostMonster CPU Limiting Factors (Throttling)
Some said that HostMonster CPU Limiting Factors (Throttling) data is not accurate. I tried WP Super Cache for 1 day. It does reduce CPU usage a little bit but not much. Why? My blogs don’t have many hits from SU and Digg. So far, I only got around 80 cache pages. Let’s monitor when I get more traffic hits.
Download WordPress plugin ~ WP Super Cache here.
Website loading speed is very important. Nobody likes to wait long for a website to load. Therefore, a good hosting is a must. And you need to have supportive team from them too. Else it will take even longer time if your hosting have problem.
My friends told me that my blog was slow during loading. I tested myself and discovered the same issue ~ slowness like “waiting for www.jayceooi.com” for 10 to 20 seconds. Then the website started to load. How to improve the loading time then? Check your hosting server status is the first time that you need to do.

Server Status
As you can see, there is alert on server load ~ Box under heavy load — you may experience degraded system performance. You need to contact support team if you continue seeing this message. Else your website will be as slow as turtle.

Service Status
Another thing to check is the service status. All of the services should be okay most of the time. A good hosting will rectify any issue occurs without us inform them. However, I did face problem with my previous hosting company. I need to contact them to bring up the SQL server myself. And they don’t even know that that SQL server was down. What a joke… By the way, my hosting support team solved the issue before I report it.
Finally, be sure that you select a good web hosting like I did. I am using HostMonster. How about you?
226 Output truncated to 2000 matches… This was what I got when I was trying to backup my blogs files before upgrade to WordPress 2.8. I have a folder that contains more than 2000 files. And the HostMonster hosting that I am using seem does not allow me to download all the file that I want. So I search ‘226 Output truncated to 2000 matches hostmonster’ at Google. Hopefully, I can find a way to solve it.
Here is the solution that I found…
Use the backup feature in cPanel. It will gzip your specified directory and files into a single file, and you can download everything in a compressed format.
There seem like a server limitation to allow 2000 files upload/download only. Besides using the backup feature in cPanel, any other way to fix it? I failed to download the backup due to large backup file size (around 1 GB) and slow Streamyx Internet connection speed.
Do you want to start earning money through online? You won’t be reading this if you are not interested to do so.
Well, let me share out some of my experience on the way to make money online.
1. Get yourself a website. You can host it at a paid hosting company like I host JayceOoi.com at HostMonster.com. Or get a free one like Blogger or WordPress for testing it out first.
2. Find advertisement for your website. There are many online advertisement companies out there. You can try all of them. I tested Google AdSense, Nuffnang and Advertlets for the moment. Don’t bother to try Advertlets for the moment as I still did not receive any payment after cash out on December 2007. Their service is way too slow.
3. Make your website popular. Share it with friend and family. Ask them to visit it.
